Evidence of gambling dates back millennia, with dice appearing in China around 2300 BC and card playing showing up in Rome by 500 AD.
Modern casinos can be very luxurious and high-end, a reflection of the increasing importance of the gaming industry. They can offer five-star hotel accommodations, Michelin star restaurants and top billed entertainment shows. They also feature shopping and entertainment areas that are intended to attract the widest possible range of guests.
As with any other business, the casino industry is susceptible to fluctuations in economic conditions. In addition, some states are antigambling and restrict casino operations, while others have relaxed their laws and allow them to operate freely. Casinos are often built on or near Native American reservations, which have their own set of gaming laws and are exempt from state prohibitions.
