Dark Flow in Slots

A narrow notch, groove or opening, as in a machine or container. Also figuratively, a position in a group, series or sequence; a slot in a schedule.

A slot machine is a gambling machine with three or more reels that spin when activated. The symbols on the reels may represent fruit, letters, numbers or card suits. The machine pays out winnings if the symbols line up on a payline. Modern slot machines are operated by computer programs that generate random combinations of symbols. They may also have bonus features, such as mini-games and free spins.

Historically, slot machines were operated by pulling a lever or handle to initiate a spin. More recently, electromechanical slot machines employed “tilt switches” that would make or break a circuit if the machine was tilted or otherwise tampered with. While most modern electronic machines do not have such switches, a technical fault (door switch in the wrong state, reel motor failure, low coin supply, etc.) is still sometimes referred to as a “tilt.”

The fact that dark flow accounts for aspects of enjoyment in slots that are distinct from reward reactivity further underscores the importance of understanding how people enjoy different types of slot games. Moreover, these new measures are easier to obtain than other psychophysiological measures that require cumbersome electrodes and wires, which may reduce ecological validity and inhibit flow. As such, they can provide valuable insights for the design of future slot games that maximize player enjoyment.
