Originally, there were two basic forms of poker: straight and draw. In straight poker, active players receive five cards facedown, one betting interval, and a showdown at the end. In later versions of the game, players are permitted to draw and discard cards in turn and be replaced by new ones from the undealt portion of the pack. The active players who choose not to draw are said to “stand pat.” After this draw process, players make their final bets, and the game ends.<\/p>\n
In many limit games, a player’s initial bet may be a relatively small amount. However, as the game progresses, the maximum bet increases. In many games, this amount of betting is capped at three raises. After three raises, subsequent players may call only if they have the same amount of chips as the player before them. Players may also choose to raise or match the open bet, or fold if they are not winning a hand.<\/p>\n
The objective of a poker hand is to have the highest-ranking set of cards. Once all players have thrown in their cards, the player with the best hand wins the pot. If there is a tie, the pot is split among the remaining players. If a player wins a hand, he or she collects the pot. The player with the highest hand, known as the “big blind,” is the winner.
