Poker is a card game where players place chips (representing money) into the pot voluntarily. The game is primarily played for fun and excitement, but there are a number of strategies based on probability, psychology and game theory that can improve your odds of winning.<\/p>\n
Before the cards are dealt each player must place an initial bet, called an ante. There are then one or more betting intervals, depending on the variant of poker being played. During each betting interval, a player may call the bet of any other player, raise his own bet by an amount determined by the rules of the game being played, or check, which means that he will not place any additional chips into the pot.<\/p>\n
During the first round of betting the dealer will put three community cards face up on the table that anyone can use, this is known as the flop. This is when your chances to make a good hand are highest.<\/p>\n
There are a number of hands that tend to win more than others. These include the Aces, Pairs, Flush and Straights. However, a lot of these hands are easily concealed. For example, if you hold pocket 5\u2019s and the flop comes A-8-5 people will be expecting you to have trip fives but actually you might have a straight! This is why position is so important.
